This year marks the fifty year anniversary of the death of Thomas Merton on December 10th, 1968.
He had a lifelong interest in eastern religions and would go on to write books on his understanding of them.
He thought there was common ground at a deep level between contemplative and monastic traditions of eastern and western religions. In 1969, he journeyed to Asia to visit sacred sites in various countries.
At a Monks’ Conference in Bangkok, Thailand
he touched a faulty fan in his hotel room and was accidentally electrocuted.
His death, a Zen instant of fire and light. He would become one of the burnt men.
